Tirpitz Anchor Chain Link

The Tirpitz was the largest battleship in the German Navy’s fleet with a loaded displacement of 52,600 tons. This single link of the anchor chain, which alone weighs 66lbs / 30kg was presented to the RAF Chief of the Air Staff by the Royal Norwegian Air Force on 9 June 1992.

Tirpitz Bulkhead

4lb Incendiary Bomb Mk 4

Fires started by incendiary bombs were found to be the most effective way of destroying industrial and urban targets. The 4lb incendiary was the smallest but most effective device used by Bomber Command – 80 million were dropped during the war.

The High Capacity (HC) series of bombs ranged in weight from 2,000lbs to 12,000lbs. Their large weight of explosives was contained in a relatively thin casing to maximise blast damage.

22,000lb Grand Slam Bomb

The 22,000lb Grand Slam and the smaller 12,000lb Tallboy were specialist weapons devised by Barnes Wallis. They were designed to penetrate deep into the ground where the explosives created an underground cavern into which the surrounding area, and any nearby structure, would collapse.
