Lewis Cunningham served as a pilot in Harrier and Typhoon aircraft, including operations in Afghanistan. He later had responsibility for the Red Arrows and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

Famed for his First World War works, in 1940 Nash was invited again to become an Official War Artist for the revived scheme chaired by Sir Kenneth Clark. When Clark’s War Artists’ Advisory Committee assigned him to the Air Ministry Nash made propagandist watercolours of RAF and crashed Luftwaffe aircraft.

The Avro Lancaster was designed as a four-engined replacement for the Avro Manchester, using four Rolls-Royce Merlin engines instead of two Rolls-Royce Vultures. The prototype first flew on 9 January 1941.
