Gloster Gladiator Mark I

The Gloster Gladiator was the RAF's last biplane fighter and the first to feature an enclosed cockpit for the pilot. Deliveries began in 1937, with Gladiators continuing to serve in the early years of the Second World War.

Handley Page Hampden TB Mk I

An RAF crew were flying this Hampden, a torpedo bomber variant, to the Soviet Union to help protect Arctic convoys, when it was shot down by German fighters on 5 September 1942.

Westland Lysander Mk. III

Westland Lysanders are best known for transporting secret agents to and from occupied France during the Second World War. This Lysander first flew with No. 255 Squadron in 1940, but later flew with No. 161 (Special Duties) Squadron from October 1944.

Hawker Typhoon Mk. IB

Designed as a replacement for the Hurricane and Spitfire, the Typhoon was the first RAF fighter capable of exceeding 400mph when it entered service in 1941. This speed allowed Typhoons to successfully combat the newer, more capable aircraft coming into German service at the same time, such as the Fw-190, easily matching them at low levels.

Avro York Mk I

Manufactured by Avro and incorporating the wings, tail, undercarriage and engines of the Lancaster bomber, the York was to prove a useful military and civilian transport aircraft in war and peace.

De Havilland Mosquito TT.35

Combining speed, long range and the ability to operate at high altitudes, the De Havilland Mosquito was one of the truly outstanding aircraft to emerge during the Second World War. The TT.35 is a target tug variant.

This Mosquito is a late bomber variant. It was built at the end of the Second World War, and served with No 98 Squadron in Germany in 1950-51 before being replaced by Vampire fighter-bombers.

De Havilland Chipmunk T.10 WP912

The Chipmunk entered RAF service in 1950, replacing the Tiger Moth as as an initial pilot trainer, offering relatively modern features such as flaps, brakes, radio and an enclosed cockpit. His Royal Highness Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, learned to fly this Chipmunk - he made his first solo flight on 20 December 1952.

Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer CC.2

Known as the ‘Twin Pin’, the Twin Pioneer was a follow-up to the same company’s single-engined short take-off and landing (STOL) transport, the Pioneer, and like the latter required an area only 30m (99ft) by 275m (902ft) in which to operate. The Twin Pioneer was initially designed as a 16-passenger civil transport aircraft and first flew in June 1955. Following the success of the Pioneer, the RAF ordered 39 of the new type, the first examples entering service in October 1958 with No.78 Squadron in Aden, air-lifting troops and supplies in the Protectorate.
