Fighter command combat report of No. 64 Squadron for 15 August 1940
Combat reports were official documents detailing operational encounters with enemy aircraft. They convey both the mental strain of operations and the sense of excitement when victory claims were made.
This combat report provides details of an engagement involving No. 64 Squadron on 15 August 1940. 15 August 1940 was a day in which the Luftwaffe launched a highly ambitious plan with three of their air fleets being utilised in the Battle of Britain for the first time. On this day, the combat for No. 64 Squadron was not as successful as they suffered two losses: Flying Officer Christopher John Drake Andreae is reported in this document to be missing and sadly, he never returned. His name can be found on the Runnymede Memorial. Flying Officer Ralph Roberts was also shot down and reported missing following this combat. He was however captured and held in Stalag III until his liberation in May 1945. Roberts was released from RAF service on 9 March 1946 holding the rank of Flight Lieutenant.
